   CITY of LA GRANDE

COUNCIL CANDIDATES

               2010

Seven (7) individuals have filed for five (5) seats on the La Grande City Council, as follows:

POSITION NUMBER 1 - Mayor - TWO YEAR TERM

Daniel S. Pokorney

R. Doyle Slater

POSITION NUMBER 3 - Councilor – TWO YEAR TERM (Remainder of a Four-

 Year Term)

John O. Bozarth

Colleen F. Johnson

POSITION NUMBER 5 - Councilor - FOUR YEAR TERM

            Gary Lillard (Incumbent)

POSITION NUMBER 6 - Councilor - FOUR YEAR TERM

Mary Ann Miesner (Incumbent)

POSITION NUMBER 7 - Councilor - FOUR YEAR TERM

            Jerry Sebestyen

Position Numbers 1, 5, 6, and 7, are in the standard rotation for this election season, as established by the La Grande City Charter.  Position Number Three (3), was recently declared vacant by the City Council, following the resignation of former Councilor Les Balsiger, who moved from the City for work-related reasons.  While the Council may appoint an individual to fill Position Number Three (3), in the short term, the City Charter mandates that the remainder of a four-year term in excess of two (2) years shall be filled by election.  The term in question shall expire on December 31, 2012; as will the term for Position Number One (1).  All other terms (Positions 5, 6, and 7) shall expire on December 31, 2014.

Pursuant to Section 29. of the La Grande City Charter, if two (2) or fewer candidates file for any particular position number, the names of those candidates will be placed only on the November General Election Ballot.  Therefore, a Primary Election will not be scheduled for City of La Grande Mayor and Council candidates on May 18, 2010; rather, all candidates will move forward to the November 2, 2010, General Election Ballot.
